Hey Y'all,
I am writing to fill you in on our Big South Fork trip yesterday. We had an excellent time checking out the O&W bridge. Unfortunately for us we could not drive the off road trail, as we had planned, because it was closed. Regardless we still had a great time walking along the river, skipping rocks, and rock hopping. It was all that we could do not to dive into the crystal clear water. Our dog Gypse however had a wonderful time splashing and swimming among the fishes.
The O&W bridge is an old rail bed which used to have various uses from transporting coal, to goods, to people. Among the beautiful boulders and majestic trees there are a few scattered campsites for those who long to camp. We only went for the day, and from our home town it took about one and a half hours. It was well worth the drive.
While we were there we also checked out Angel Falls. Although it is more of a rapid then a falls it is still worth the 2 mile hike. Along the trail we saw hornets nests, mushrooms, and many birds and wildflowers. At the end of the trail there are many boulders. The kids had tons of fun jumping from rock to rock. There was even a rock that resembled a lounge chair. Needless to say we had great fun with that.
On our way home we ran into a terrible wreck on US 27 and sat waiting for an hour before turning around. We didn't see the wreck up close but three helicopters were brought in. A gentlemen stopped and told us that there were children involved. I thank my lucky stars that we had stopped for a pee, because it very likely that it could have been us. A sad way to end a beautiful day.
Bye for now.
